Today, 26 August, is a special day for us Ilmatarians, as we celebrate Ilmatar’s name day. Since its establishment in 2011, Ilmatar has grown to a widely known name as a leader in renewable energy in the Nordics and far beyond. But what does the name stand for? Let’s take a brief look at its history and then take a creative approach to explore what each letter could represent—reflecting the values and spirit that drive us every day.

The origin of Ilmatar’s name comes from Finnish literature. Our company is named after the goddess of air, Ilmatar, from the Finnish national epic Kalevala. In the epic saga, Ilmatar lands in the primordial sea and is impregnated by the wind. A scaup flies across the skies and lays an egg on her knee. Out of the egg are born the sun, the earth, the heavens, the moon and the stars.

Ilmatar started its journey in the world of wind power generation, making the name of the goddess of air an inspired and perfectly fitting choice for a company dedicated to harnessing the power of the wind. Today, we generate clean electricity sustainably and efficiently also from sun, and with energy storage, we enhance a more flexible energy ecosystem.

The name Ilmatar not only carries this rich cultural mythology but also gives us an inventive way to illustrate the values and spirit that guide us today. Here’s how we like to see the letters of Ilmatar:

I – Innovative. We create new solutions, and a pioneering spirit drives us forward.
L – Leading. We act as a forerunner, setting the standard in renewable energy.
M – Mission-driven. We work with purpose, advancing the clean transition.
A – Accountable. We take responsibility and remain transparent in our actions.
T – Together. We believe in collaboration—with communities, partners, and colleagues.

All our solutions and the way we work reflect these values. We aim to leave a positive mark on the world, whether by expanding the potential of renewable energy or promoting sustainability. At Ilmatar, we don’t just produce energy—we show what responsible and forward-thinking energy solutions look like, and we’re proud to call ourselves Ilmatarians.

Did you know? Between 2010 and 2019, almost 100 Finnish girls were given Ilmatar as one of their names.
