Johan Ehrnsten, a student in International Marketing at Åbo Akademi University, has interned at Ilmatar to investigate how offshore wind power can be integrated with tourism.
Tourism alongside wind power
Report abstract
The report provides a clear example of how wind power and tourism can work together. A sustainable energy visitor centre, which also offers various activities created by local businesses, is a combination that benefits both the touristic, business and educational sectors. This allows a synergy in the field of tourism to be created, enabling several businesses to benefit from each other.
Key aspects
- To attract customers, activities are needed, such as virtual reality (VR), hiking, diving, canoeing and child-friendly experiences.
- The visitor centre can become a model for sustainable tourism and strengthen the Åland brand.
- There is a demand for year-round visitor facilities.
- The centre can sell and market products and services offered by local operators. In addition, the centre offers a social benefit by educating the public about sustainability.
- The centre can also host events or create volunteer projects to benefit the local community.
Possible further development of this study
Development of a visitor centre could continue with the developer presenting this report to public stakeholders in the tourism and business sectors to seek their input. In order for the visitor centre tobe established, it is important to secure long-term partnerships. Without collaboration and businesses willing to commit to the visitor centre, development will be challenging.
The location of the visitor centre is also important. In order for planning, construction and operation to run smoothly, the initiative needs acceptance within the local community. The site must be suitable for a visitor centre; for example there must be enough space for both activities and infrastructure, while the impact on the natural environment should be as limited as possible.
