Ilmatar

September 25 marks the birthday of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the flag is raised for them. We are committed to advancing SDGs – every day of the year.

Commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals comes very naturally to us. Clean and affordable energy is the key to fighting against the climate crisis. Tackling climate change is vital to the success of all SDGs.

We support all 17 SDGs and advance in particular nine environmental, economic and social goals closely related to our business; Good health and well-being (SDG 3), Affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), Decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), Sustainable industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9), Responsible consumption (SDG 12), Climate action (SDG 13), Life below water (SDG 14), Life on land (SDG 15) and Partnerships for the goals (SDG 17).

Here are some examples of how these goals are visible in our work:

Good health and well-being (SDG 3)

We take care of the safety, health and well-being of our employees in many ways. During the past year, Ilmatar Klubi organised activities that promote well-being, such as yoga, sailing, golf and tennis. In addition to Ilmatar Klubi events, exercise is encouraged in the form of a discount on gym membership, and we offer a wider range of occupational health care services than required by law.

Affordable and clean energy (SDG 7)

We produce renewable energy and increase the supply of renewable electricity on the market. In 2023, the amount of renewable energy we produced was 415,292 MWh. Our Korpilevonmäki and Pahkakoski wind farms, which will enter commercial production in 2025, with a total of 36 turbines, will further increase the amount of energy we produce.

Climate action (SDG 13)

Producing renewable energy and advancing clean transition are significant climate actions. In terms of carbon dioxide emissions, we achieved a positive climate impact in 2023, which means that the positive impacts of our operations, also known as the carbon handprint, are greater than our carbon footprint. In the long term, emissions from the construction of renewable energy sources will be offset when we replace fossil fuels with renewable energy, which will reduce the total amount of carbon dioxide emissions from the Nordic energy grid.

Life on land (SDG 15)

We take care of the environment and people in all our projects. In 2023, we had 68 ongoing nature surveys. In all our licensed projects we have carried out nature surveys required by the EIA process or voluntarily. In addition, we commissioned the first nature footprint studies and carbon balance calculations for solar power projects and calculated the carbon footprint of the first solar park.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals were signed nine years ago and are a unique global achievement. All 193 UN member states adopted a plan for a better future for everyone, giving rise to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The guiding principle is to leave no one behind.
