Sustainability is at the core of Ilmatar’s operations – today and in the future.
“Today, the importance of sustainability work should perhaps be emphasised more than ever. Globally, ambitions related to sustainable development and climate action are facing increasing headwinds, even though the climate crisis has not disappeared. For us at Ilmatar, publishing a sustainability review is essential. It is a way to demonstrate to our stakeholders that we are taking concrete actions for the climate and society, and that we report on these actions transparently,” says Anna-Maria Palmroos, who is responsible for sustainability matters at executive management level at Ilmatar.
Clean electricity production increased by one third
In 2025, we increased our clean energy production by commencing commercial operations at our Korpilevonmäki and Pahkakoski wind farms. With 36 new wind turbines, we surpassed the milestone of 100 turbines in operation and increased our total production capacity by 50 per cent. Our ownership share of Finland’s total wind power capacity reached seven per cent, making Ilmatar the largest wind power producer in Finland.
During 2025, we produced 1.3 terawatt-hours of renewable electricity, representing an increase of more than 30 per cent in clean electricity production compared to the previous year. Through our in-house electricity trading operations, we channelled our renewable power production efficiently to the market, supporting both our own emission reduction targets and our customers’ carbon neutrality goals.
As a result of increased renewable energy production, our positive climate impact already offset the emissions of nearly 60,000 Finns.
Responsible actions for the environment and local communities
We actively implemented our sustainability strategy across environmental, social and governance dimensions. We contributed to biodiversity protection efforts through both employee engagement and financial support as part of the Luontolahja Suomelle (Nature Gift to Finland) initiative.
We promoted constructive dialogue and mutual understanding with local communities in our project areas and continued our financial support for village communities and local sports clubs. We also invested in occupational safety and employee wellbeing. In 2025, for the first time in the company’s history, there were zero lost-time occupational accidents at our construction sites and offices.
We are committed to ensuring that our business is ethical, transparent and consistent. During the reporting period, we updated key corporate policies, strategies and sustainability targets. All employees completed the United Nations Doing Business with Integrity training to ensure a shared understanding of ethical business principles and to reinforce the message that sustainability is an integral part of everyday operations and decision-making at Ilmatar.
In 2026, we will continue to operate in line with our strategy as an independent power producer. We will further advance the clean energy transition by focusing particularly on energy storage solutions and by integrating sustainability work even more closely into all aspects of our operations.
