Land lease Sweden

Land lease Sweden

Leasing out land for solar panels

Emission-free, silent, low-cost and maintenance-free energy production with a lifetime of 45-50 years.

In Sweden, we currently focus on identifying land suitable for large-scale solar energy production, mainly areas in the range of 150 hectares and above. The energy production at the solar parks is supplemented with battery storage as a balancing resource. We prioritise areas with lower nature value, such as former production forests.

Large-scale solar energy production is an efficient and long-term profitable way to use impediment or forest land with low economic or environmental values, while producing more of the fossil-free energy we need to meet the electrification of society.

Land owner benefits

Harvest every day – instead of every 50 years

Mankind has practiced long-term solar energy storage since we started traditional forestry. Supplementing forestry with solar energy production is a new way to achieve the same goal, with the distinction that your property will generate yields continuously and without interruption for up to 50 years.

Diversification

A broader economic base for farmers and forest owners.

Risk mitigation

Forestry is already impacted by climate change, increasing risks such as wildfires, droughts, storm damage, fluctuating water levels, and pests such as the spruce bark beetle.

Increased biodiversity

Through carefully planned conservation efforts, solar parks can become habitats for bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

Long-term high yields

Roughly ten times higher than in traditional forestry.

Land restoration

Production forests with limited natural values can be replaced by solar parks where we produce renewable energy while the land can return to being grazed, hilly pasture.

Freedom of choice

We offer our landowners the choice between a fixed lease or a share of the revenue from the sale of electricity. The majority choose a combination to gain both the security of a fixed income and a boost in times of high electricity prices.

Did you know? In many cases, large-scale solar parks can coexist with agricultural activities, such as sheep grazing. With planned conservation efforts, solar farms can also become habitats for bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

Large-scale solar power production

Low input – high impact

  • In Sweden and Finland, 63,4% of the land surface is forest

  • In total over 50 million hectares of forest

  • One hectare of land can generate 1 GWh of solar energy

  • This means that a mere 1 % of our forests can produce 500 TWh per year

Scale is key for solar energy

Solar power production can be realised swiftly to meet the growing demand for renewable electricity at a competitive price. But to get there, we need to upscale production facilities:
  • Costs and land use per energy unit decrease as the size of the solar farm increases.
  • Increased capacity improves the stability and reliability of the national grid.
  • Sweden’s SE3 and SE4 energy zones face a significant shortfall in energy production and a rapidly increasing need for more energy.
  • We can make a bigger change and significantly contribute to Sweden’s energy self-sufficiency and production target of 100% renewable energy by 2040.

A solid, reliable and long-term tenant

Leasing out land for green energy production is a major decision, with contracts often spanning 40-50 years. As a landowner, it is important to cooperate with a reliable lessee that honours agreements and has a strong local presence.
