Tervakoski-Riihiviita

Janakkala, Riihimäki – Finland
Tervakoski-Riihiviita
Est. 90 MWp Total power
Max. 105 Ha Area size
Est. 2028 To be operational

The Tervakoski–Riihiviita solar power project is being planned in the municipalities of Janakkala and the city of Riihimäki. The total capacity of the project is close to 90 MWp, with commercial commissioning expected no earlier than 2028.

In Janakkala, the Tervakoski subarea is located on the fields east of the Hämeenlinna motorway, spanning approximately 1.5 kilometres and consisting of three separate areas, A, B, and C (from north to south). Area C connects to the Riihiviita subarea in the city of Riihimäki, which is an approximately 45-hectare agricultural area. The overall project has legally valid building permits.

The areas planned for construction in Tervakoski are mainly farmland, with one small forested section. Special attention has been paid during the permitting process to landscape planning, to ensure the project integrates well with the surrounding rural environment. A diverse planting buffer is planned along the eastern edge of the solar panel area to reduce visual impact on nearby properties. The solar panels and planting buffers will also help to mitigate future noise from the motorway.

In the Riihiviita area, particular care has been taken to preserve the open agricultural landscapes of the culturally and historically valuable Riihiviita Manor. The area planned for construction is located on the western edge of a large field, west of Riihiviidantie and south of Kolanojantie. This placement ensures that the appearance of the broad field remains open and rural from key viewpoints. Certain locations will feature shrub plantings for visual screening, but no tall trees will be planted. The Riihiviita area is entirely in active cultivation.

Two options are being examined for connecting the project to the electricity grid. The project will be connected via medium-voltage underground cables either southwards to Fingrid’s Forssa–Hikiä 110 kV line, or northwards to Elenia’s Hikiä–Linnamäki 110 kV line. The underground cable route from the project area to the substation will follow existing road edges. No new overhead lines are planned as part of the project.

“Many people strongly support placing renewable energy facilities along motorways. This is exactly that kind of project!”
