Äskya

Älmhult – Sweden
Äskya
Est. 340 MWp Total power
Max. 337 Ha Area size
Est. 2033 To be operational

Ilmatar plans to build a solar power park on the properties Älmhult Äskya 3:1, Älmhult Froafälle 3:1, Älmhult Idhult 1:23, Älmhult Näranshult 1:7 and Älmhult Näranshult 1:3 in the municipality of Älmhult.

For this purpose, the applicant has signed a lease agreement with the property owners. The land within the property has previously been operated as peat extraction, but it is now out of use.

The facility is planned to include ground-mounted solar panels, inverters, step-up transformers, switching stations, transformer stations, energy storage facility, power lines and communication networks, roads, and service buildings. The various components of the solar power park are necessary to convert the direct current generated by the solar panels into alternating current and to transport the energy to the regional power grid.

The purpose of the operation is to both supply Sweden’s electricity grid with renewable energy and at the same time reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the drained peatland by restoring up to 150 hectares to new wetlands. The latter can also have a positive effect on plant and animal life.

The consultation process with the County Administrative Board of Kronoberg, along with discussions involving stakeholders and the public concerning the solar power park, has been successfully completed. Feedback from residents and other stakeholders has been integrated into the park’s design. The area underwent thorough investigations, including assessments of natural values, frog and bird inventories, and archaeological studies, leading to modifications in the project based on these findings. Overall, the area exhibits relatively low natural values and presents few conflicts with other interests.

The formal submission of the application for an environmental permit and water operations was made to the Land and Environment Court in Växjö on April 30, 2025.
