Background
Ainola BESS
Pyhäntä – FinlandIlmatar has developed and constructed an energy storage project in Piiparinmäki, Pyhäntä, Finland. The energy storage system has a power capacity of 30 MW and an energy storage capacity of 41 MWh. The storage facility is located in Piiparinmäki wind farm, next to the Murronkangas substation.
The facility will be able to smooth out fluctuations in renewable energy production. The system will also be able to balance frequency fluctuations (up and down) in the electricity grid to maintain a good level of electricity transmission capacity.
The system has a lifetime of about 15 years, after which it can be doubled by upgrading the storage modules.
