Energy storage BESS / Under development

Västervik – Riskula

Kristiinankaupunki – Finland
Västervik – Riskula
Est. 25 MW Total capacity
Est. 2026 To be operational

Background

Ilmatar is preparing an energy storage project in connection with the Västervik wind power project. The power of the energy storage system is 30 MW and the energy storage capacity is 60 MWh. The storage is located at Riskula substation on the east side of the main road 8. By placing the energy storage in connection with the wind farm, the already existing infrastructure can be utilized for multiple purposes.

The energy storage can balance the production variation typical for renewable energy. In addition, the system can balance the frequency variation of the network, so that the electricity transmission network reliability remains at a good level. The lifetime of the system is about 15 years, after which the lifetime can be extended by changing the storage modules.
