Background

Ilmatar is preparing an energy storage project in connection with the Alajärvi wind power project. The power of the energy storage system is 25 MW and the energy storage capacity is 50 MWh. The storage is located in the Louhukangas wind farm area, next to the wind farm substation. 

By locating the energy storage facility at the wind farm, the existing infrastructure can be used for multiple purposes.

The energy storage facility will help to smooth out the fluctuations in production that are typical of renewable energy. It can also balance the frequency variation of the grid to ensure that the grid system maintains a good level of capacity to transmit electricity. The system has a lifetime of about 15 years, after which it can be extended by replacing the storage modules.
