Energy Saving Week, 5-11 October, may sound like a campaign in which an electricity producer does not naturally belong. For us, however, the theme week is above all about responsibility. At Ilmatar, energy production is not only about generating clean energy responsibly, but also about ensuring that energy is used wisely.
We want to help build a society that is both low-carbon and competitive. Energy Saving Week increases awareness of the role of energy in everyday life and encourages people to reflect on how energy is used. This is also an important part of the energy transition.
The Future Needs More Clean Electricity
Transport, heating and industry are rapidly moving society toward a cleaner future as fossil fuels are replaced by electricity and heat pumps. At the same time, the number of data centres and other types of infrastructure that depend on clean electricity continues to grow. In Finland, electricity consumption is forecast to increase by as much as 40 per cent by 2030 as a result of new investments.
However, growing electricity demand does not mean that electricity will inevitably become scarce in the future. Finland has excellent opportunities to expand clean electricity generation. What is needed are investments and timely project development.
In our view, the key objective of the energy transition is not to reduce electricity consumption at any cost. More important is to reduce emissions, use energy efficiently and generate the electricity society needs as cleanly as possible.
Energy Powers Everything
The theme of this year’s Energy Saving Week is Everything Runs on Energy. The theme highlights the central role energy plays in our daily lives, often without us even noticing it.
Whether we are charging an electric vehicle, heating our homes, using digital services or manufacturing products in a factory, energy is essential. The availability and cost of energy affect both households and businesses.
As a renewable energy company, our task is to produce clean electricity for society.
For us, Energy Saving Week is one way to make that work more visible and to remind people that even when energy is clean, it still matters how we use it.
Even clean energy is too valuable to waste.
