Ilmatar has been granted permission to build a solar farm in Knihult, Småland. As part of the park, two batteries with a total storage capacity of 40 MW are also planned.
Knihult
Älmhult – SwedenThe park will be built on two former peat extraction sites with low ecological value. The plan is to combine the establishment of the solar park with measures to restore wetlands underneath the solar panels.
Healthy wetlands typically act as natural carbon sinks, as biomass does not decompose in the saturated soil. Conversely, when a peatland is drained to allow peat mining, the soils tend to release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Rewetting drained peatland is, therefore, a recommended method to reduce carbon emissions.
Instead of producing peat or emitting carbon dioxide, in the future the old peat extraction sites in Knihult can hopefully be restored to wetland, while producing sustainable, fossil-free energy.
